Ghoema, or drum, is a narrative transmedia project exploring the migration and cultural history of the Cape Malay, specifically performers of the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Kaapse Klopse, or Tweede Nuwe Jaar. A native instrument of the Malay people in South Africa’s Western Cape, the ghoema is associated with colorful rhythms and euphoric or altered states conjured through its percussive sound. For Ghoema, the drum stretches beyond representations of embodied memory and journeys through historic diasporic traditions of resistance, exploring memory itself as a radical and defiant act in the face of colonial occupation and oppression.
